AoE2 has bigger player base. It's 20 years older, and many of the veteran players did not (and will never) switch to AoE4. Some of them also hate that a new game in the franchise is potentially eating away the very established player base of AoE2, so you will often see AoE2 veterans swarming and ridiculing AoE4 forums.Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings
This game is widely considered to be the most popular and beloved Age of Empires game. It has a huge following of dedicated fans who continue to play it to this day. Its popularity is due to its immersive gameplay, intricate strategy, and historical accuracy. It's a great game. AOE2 is the best version of AOE by a mile and it's not even close. 3 is different and plays different from 2 and 4, which are similar.
Is Age of Empires 4 still popular : Age of Empires IV was one of the best games of 2021. But for a lot of returning fans, it was also one of the best games of 2022 — and could still be one of the best games of 2023. That's because, like many competitive online games, AoE4 still has an active player base and a steady drip-feed of new content.
Why do more people play AoE2 than aoe4
Age of Empires II, both HD and DE versions, are preferable to Age of Empires IV. The gameplay, mechanics, community, development history and even aesthetics look better. You are also able to emulate the factions of AoEIV with the present AoEII civilizations.
Is AoE2 still popular : 2 is the one that basically nailed it and its still very much alive despite how old the game is. It depends a bit on what you're looking for but its probably the best one to get in a general sense, but again it depends on what you look for in an RTS.
If you are only buying one (and this is in the most literal sense) go with AOE 2, the game simply has more content and is more refined. Not a lot of people would say that the 1st game is better than the second; in this case it holds to be true.

But be warned, this is another "old and flawed" game from the same era, specially when it comes to online multiplayer. The more you play it, the more you'll notice it's problems, mostly because of players exploiting these flaws for some easy wins.
Maybe it stems from the fact that the fourth entry in the AoE saga, while looking sparkling and pristine enough to justify its identity as a modern title, doesn't differentiate itself enough from previous entries, even with its new civilizations, features and historical campaigns.

Why is AOE2 better than AOE1
The AOE 2 is the best among any age of empires title. The features like ability to garrison and gates with buildings like castle and all make it much better than the AOE 1. In AOE 1 all civs are almost the same but in AOE 2 we have slight differences in terms of unique units and unique tech.
