African lions used to be spread across most of the continent, but now are only found in sub-Saharan Africa, with 80% in eastern or southern Africa. What is the African lion’s prey : In the wild: As carnivores, African lions are specialized communal predators of medium- to large-sized ungulates. Typical prey includes antelopes, gazelle, warthogs, zebra, wildebeest and sometimes Cape buffalo, giraffe and young elephants.

Former distribution and habitat
The Barbary lion lived in the mountains and deserts of the Maghreb of North Africa from Morocco to Egypt. It was eradicated following the spread of firearms and bounties for shooting lions. Today, it is locally extinct in this region.
