Influenced by the late 1970's new wave of British heavy metal bands including Iron Maiden and Diamond Head, Metallica was formed in 1981 by the Danish immigrant Lars Ulrich (1963), a drummer.Of course, though they're the most widely-known heavy metal band from the '80s and '90s, there is a wealth of other great bands from the era that sound like Metallica. Megadeth, Slayer, and Pantera – all legends in their own rights – have discographies that pack a punch similar to that of their esteemed contemporary.

What punk band inspired Metallica
Discharge, forefathers of the heavier derivative of punk that is “hardcore”, was instrumental in inspiring thrash metal, most notably Metallica. Amebix, the progenitors of “crust punk', served as a nasty influence for numerous early black metal bands.
