It's no secret that Age of Empires 2 is regularly touted as the best of the bunch. The release of Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition was a dream come true for fans of the series. Finally, one of the gold standards of the RTS genre was brought up to par with more contemporary games.2 is the one that basically nailed it and its still very much alive despite how old the game is. It depends a bit on what you're looking for but its probably the best one to get in a general sense, but again it depends on what you look for in an RTS.If you are only buying one (and this is in the most literal sense) go with AOE 2, the game simply has more content and is more refined. Not a lot of people would say that the 1st game is better than the second; in this case it holds to be true. AoE 2 DE is the way to go.
