Why is Britain so powerful but so small
Arguably, the small size of Britain, its small population, and the fact it is an island, are its greatest strengths. Being an island led to a dependency amongst the British on resources from the sea and a need to establish naval trade routes; and this meant that a strong navy was required.
American soldiers think of British (or Canadian or Australian too) soldiers as excellent soldiers, brave men and women, our finest, most reliable allies, funny as hell to talk to, and easy to become friends with. Also as undermanned, under-equipped, underfunded, and operating on a shoestring budget. However as always, skill and competence of the individual soldier is more important than higher numbers. As of 2024, NATO had approximately 3.39 million active military personnel, compared with 1.32 million active military personnel in the Russian military.
Why is NATO so powerful : Stone: NATO provides the logistical support so its members can effectively pool specialized military forces that wouldn't be as effective if they acted independently. It has advanced command-and-control facilities that allows it to project force anywhere in the world.
