The Palestinian territories consist of two distinct areas: the West Bank (including East Jerusalem) and the Gaza Strip.As of May 2024, the State of Palestine is recognized as a sovereign state by 143 of the 193 member states of the United Nations. It has been a non-member observer state of the United Nations General Assembly since November 2012.The landlocked West Bank – the larger of the two Palestinian territories – is home to some three million Palestinians. The League of Nations gave Britain mandatory power over Palestine in 1922. Both Jews and Arabs have claimed it as theirs alone. From a purely historical perspective, “Israel” predates “Palestine” by more than a millennium. But, with the Jewish people then dispersed from their homeland, “Palestine” became home to a substantial Arab population, again for more than a millennium.
Before 1948, Palestine was home to a diverse population of Arabs, Jews, and Christians, as all groups had religious ties to the area, especially the city of Jerusalem.
