Do samurai have ranks?
There were three principal ranks:

  • gokenin (housemen), the lowest and vassals of a feudal lord.
  • goshi (rustic warrior), they could farm their land but could not have the two swords of the full samurai rank.
  • hatamoto (bannermen), the highest rank. Only these warriors were expected to die to protect their lord's interests.

The hierarchy can be represented in a pyramid; the ruler on the top, and the rest of them represented different kinds of classes. From the bottom up, there are merchants, artisans, peasants, ronin, samurai, daimyos, shogun, and finally, the emperor at the top.Shogun

Who is higher than samurai

While a shogun may have been a samurai at one point, a shogun was at the top of Japan's military while the samurai were a caste of elite soldiers. In this way, shoguns have much more power than samurai.

What was the lowest ranking samurai : The very lowest rank of samurai in the Kaga domain was that of ashigaru or foot soldier. During the long peace of the Edo period, ashigaru worked as gate guards or couriers (hikyaku). In other domains, ashigaru may not even have been viewed as samurai, and most lived in cramped tenement houses.

A hatamoto (旗本, "Guardian of the banner") was a high ranking samurai in the direct service of the Tokugawa shogunate of feudal Japan. While all three of the shogunates in Japanese history had official retainers, in the two preceding ones, they were referred to as gokenin.

A Ronin is literally another Samurai, just one that no longer has a master or lost political power in some way— like becoming a rebel, in exile or a criminal. So in theory, the average Ronin would lack the resources to maintain his equipment compared to the average Samurai.
